We are a grass-roots. 100% volunteer, non-profit organization that seeks to positively transform the experience of adult cancer patients through appropriate, original, evidence-based art installed in the ceilings of adult cancer treatment centers in North Carolina and in communities across the United States at no charge to the cancer treatment facility. We do not solicit monetary donations.
Healing Ceilings accomplishes this by seeking individual, and sustainable community relationships with the most compassionate, healing-focused professional and serious hobby artists to paint and donate evidence-based art on acoustical ceiling tiles for installation within adult cancer treatment facilities. Healing Ceilings is a dedicated Love Train filled with a growing community of artists and supporters committed to improving the visual healing environment of cancer patients in the moment, the NOW, during treatments, when they need love and light and hope the most.
The Heart Artists and Love Sponsors of the Healing Ceilings community believe experiencing appropriate ART HEALS! Why do I believe this? I've seen it! Felt it! The patients have told me! And the evidence-based design research, that began at Texas A&M University's Center for Health Care Design, by Dr. Roger Ulrich, has proven that appropriate art has the power to positively impact patient outcomes. We believe that the paintings produced within the general guidelines of evidence-based design, and installed for the direct visual benefit of the patients, positively effects the spiritual and physical experience of each cancer patient that is exposed to these prayers in paint.
We believe that the energy from the love and beauty within each artist's heart flows into the images they are painting on each art tile. Each tile is a prayer in paint created by the artist with the specific design and spiritual intent to heal those who view the imagery on it during treatments and exams. The patient exposed to this original healing imagery can feel the love of the artist and is positively distracted by the beauty, color, subject matter, loving intent and comforting design. Their mood elevates, their anxiety is lowered, they know that others care about their well-being. They know they are not alone in their battle, in that room. The painting, the artist, those who installed the prayer in paint for their benefit...all for them, showering them with love, strength, comfort, working to provide them a few moments of beautiful distraction and peaceful inner quiet to focus on healing body, mind and spirit. Healing Ceilings is

Healing Ceilings negotiates installation agreements with adult cancer treatment centers to provide the original art in ceilings that consist of 2'x2' acoustic ceiling tiles. Healing Ceilings provides artists with guidelines and blank tiles to paint healing imagery. Imagery content guidelines are based on the evidence-based design research. Upon completion of the art tiles, Healing Ceilings arranges a "love train" ride back to our base in Raleigh, NC. We then organize installation of appropriate groups of tiles for approved facilities and coordinates installation with the facilities. Healing Ceilings and the treatment facilities review tiles for appropriateness based on specific treatment area needs.
I'm Amy Jo Edwards, and I've been helping care for people I love battling cancer since I was a young child. I'm blessed to be the president and founder of Healing Ceilings. This crazy love train of heart artists and supporters dedicated to bringing visual love medicine to adult cancer patients...called - Healing Ceilings - was born during my dear husband Bill McConley's second battle with Colon Cancer in 2013 and pretty near the end of his 20th chemotherapy treatment.
For those of you who do and don't know - when you take chemotherapy treatments, you are either in a recliner-chair or in a bed, and most of the time you are looking up - up at a white ceiling. To me, those blank, white, sterile ceilings represented the loneliness, the fear, and anxiety all around us in the chemotherapy treatment suite, patient and care takers. Our health care providers were the best - compassionate and competent, but the environment was still seriously scary, Everyone is seriously ill or caring for someone else who is. I saw more patients than I could count taking treatments, fighting for their lives, and many times taking treatments alone, battling silently, looking up at a white, cold ceiling. And I couldn't "fix" it...any of "it"....
My husband is an artist, many of our friends, our urban tribe, who have loved us to victory over "C" twice are artists. My dear friend Dawn ( a four-time thriving cancer warrior) when I was bemoaning the emotional and spiritual struggle of the second round of chemo...the toll the battle was taking on my, our hearts.... I said..."that !*#$%& sterile, cold, white ceiling, I can't take it, staring into white nothingness, I don't want BIll (other patients) to have to take "it" anymore. Sitting there knowing all those patients day after day are lying there staring up, hours on end, scared, in pain, so sick, so lonely" and then My Cancer Warrior Hero Dawn quipped, "...Honey, I took that (mess) down from the ceiling (in the chemo suite) and painted beautiful alll over them and put them back up over my chair...I wasn't going to stare up at that white ceiling every day".
And so here we all are a few years later, with over 400 beautiful tiles of visual sanctuary and escape, both painted and waiting to be painted. We are a Love Train filled with scores of Heart Artists, Love Supporters, Hearts and Hands in so many communities and galleries and studios joined together selflessly to provide visual love medicine, visual sanctuary to adult cancer patients in our community, our cancer care centers NOW.
